The popular impact of much of the literature devoted to analyzing American
democracy is difficult to evaluate; but in 1841, when an obscure citizen George
Sidney Gamp completed a small volume called Democracy, Harper and Brothers
thought it worthy of inclusion in their Family Library and later brought out a
second edition. In 1852 the book was also published in South America in a
Spanish translation. Camp referred frequently to Tocqueville's Criticism and
